When is a Podcast Not a Podcast?
I love a good podcast. Especially at night when I am in bed. Forty minutes on a good topic and I will nod off to sleep half way. If I wake up through the night I tune into the second half.
But here is what's starting to get on my paps!
The Spoken Word
The word Podcast is a mashup (a Portmanteau if we are being pedantic). It is derived from iPod and Broadcast. The Podcast is the spoken word.
It is NOT a video, where I listen to the words. A video, in this sense, is a Vlog, which is a Video Blog. And just to complete the journey, a Blog is a Web log consisting of individual post, often unrelated.
I can't see you.
This should be obvious — if you claim to have a podcast, but you filmed it, stop doing that. You're either one thing or the other. They are very different mediums.
I can't listen to your Video on Youtube as you can't play a video in the background (without giving Google money, and that's not going to happen). I don't want to sit and look at you. I just want to listen to your wise words.
Biggest Mistake
More main-stream Podcasters are filming themselves, and their guest. (Is this an ego thing?)
The issue is that you and your guest can see each other; you're using visual cues and stimulation. This does not work on an audio-only track of your video. Nor does the observational commentary. "Oh, that's a nice book cover", or "That painting in the background...".
There's no need for video — we are bombarded with the moving picture everywhere. Get back to your roots, and do it correctly. Please?
