re: Your phone is making you bored

I think we all know that constant access to the internet and social media on our smart devices is rotting our brain cells.

It's easy to pick up your hand-sized digital dragon as it burns the hours out of your day.

Don't get me wrong, these little miracles are a useful tool and I would be lost without mine, but some are addicted to their allure.

I read an excellent article over on Gordon Mclean's site, which inspired this reply post. It's well worth a read — an insightful piece.

I completely agree with his sentiment about Social Media:

It’s worth remembering that social media apps are very very good at what they do, namely turning us into the product by keeping us scrolling and scrolling

He also touches on dumbing down your phone, and the notification issue. Two years ago I wrote about turning off my email notifications in the final piece of my jigsaw to stop being a slave to the ping. It has never caused me any issues, and I decide when to read content.

Many others are trying to limit their tiny-screen time. Over on Kev Quirk's blog he started a personal challenge: Step Aside, Phone. I must check in with Kev and see how that is going.

I've long since (many years) abandoned main stream socials, and feel freer. They are toxic and build a false life-vision, where everything is fun, clear, and settled. Even LinkedIn is full of absolute nonsense. Everyone's business is great. In reality some of them need to stand up and say, "actually business is crap this week". I finally ditched it professionally last year as it was doing nothing for me.

and a final word from Gordon's post:

Let your mind wander and it will guide you to what it needs.

Go on, be bored sometimes. Let your mind recover and create new ways to stimulate you; it's a powerful beast and you don't need to charge it!
