New Mobile, no changes!
Last week I finally caved and bought a new mobile phone. But nothing really changed, apart from my bank balance being lighter!
I was an early adopter of the smart phone. I was in the queue on launch day for the original iPhone in the UK in November 2007. That's 18 years ago. Wow, I feel old!!
It was a revelation; there is no getting away from that. It opened up a whole new way to interact on the go. Over the years I upgraded, and watched the hardware continue to update and amaze. The camera now in your pocket is incredible and I must admit I rarely bring out my Digital SLR camera now.
As the years marched on, I switched from iPhone to Android. I've had a few flavours of manufacturer since, but they all basically do the same. Android is the Operating System, and some manufacturers insult you by adding, what I call, the Disney Layer with all their nonsense.
For the last 12 or so years I have bought the phone outright, rather than pay for a high contract for 2 or 3 years. I last bought a mobile phone five years ago. It's great; does everything I need; and has served me well; no scratches or dents either. The only thing missing, compared to more recent mobiles, was 5G connectivity. However, living rural, 5G is not as prevalent as cities.
Last week I decided the time was right to upgrade as I wasn't getting security updates on my current mobile. So what's different with the new one? Basically nothing, other than 5G.
My new phone has all the toys: finger print reader, fabulous camera, Bluetooth, NFC, tons of storage space, and is super-fast. But my last mobile had the same.
When I took stock of what I actually use my mobile for, it boils down to a handful of apps, and a web browser.
I have the following apps:
- Browser
- Messaging
- Banking App
- Camera
- Two-factor authentication
- Note taking app
- My Calendar & contacts
- Music App
That's it. Everything else I do via the web browser.
It seems we are at that point where the phone wow-factor is basically over. Nothing exciting is happening.
What are your thoughts? Does the new flurry of phone hardware excite you?
