Is there an optimum post length?

When I am writing a blog post, I tend to write without limit. I feel free to express my thoughts or share my story. I don't wish to restrict my musing as it may not get the message across. But is there an optimum?

When I am reading a blog, I like to get hooked in the first few sentences. This gives me a feel for what's coming. There's nothing more frustrating than wading down a few paragraphs to get a hint of the content. By then I have usually lost interest. I have the attention span of a gold-fish!

I've also narrated some of my own blogs posts (I must do more of those), and I seem to typically write for an average of five minutes worth of reading. Having said that, reading aloud is slightly slower than in-your-head reading.

Researching it

I tried to do some research on this, but I didn't really find an answer I was happy with.

For example, one "study" claims they have analysed millions of pages of blog posts and conclude the optimum length is 1,890 words. However, when I dig deeper into the study it is all about writing for Search Engine Optimisation. Snore! Not interested, and I also don't believe SEO is relevant these days.

Another was stating 500 words max, under the heading of "Let me get you more Google visits". Ehm, no thanks.

Orbit Media did a study in 2024. It claims the average blog length is steady at around 1,400 words and most people take just under 4 hours to write the post. This one took about ten minutes. haha

Conclusion

I shall continue to write what I want, when, and as much or as little as I want. I am not writing this for anyone specific, or for Search Engines to gobble up. I'm in it for the fun.
