If I could be transported back...
I recently took part in the excellent Over/Under weekly series, hosted by Hyde on LazyBear.
I was asked to rate and comment on a few topics, and over/under rate them. As part of my response on Hyde's blog I had the opportunity to pose one question to the next participant.
This week I learned that my question was answered by Elena Rossini as part of her Over/Under review (a great read).
My question was:
If you could be transported back in history to a period of time, when would it be and why?
Now that the Over/Under post is published, I wanted to answer it for myself too!
My answer
I'd love to go back to the 1850s, but hop about a little into the early 1900s. So many fundamental inventions became a reality. I'd be happy to be a fly on the wall observer, rather than someone who lived in that time period.
1876: The telephone. People, miles apart being able to speak to each other instantly!
1879: Imagine seeing electric light for the first time. You could illuminate a room with the flick of a switch. It must have seemed like magic to your average person.
1903: Flying. In the sky! Amazing. (Floating in the sky via a hot-air balloon was as early as 1783).
1919: The radio -- mind-blowing for someone's voice to come out of a box in your home. Transmission of sound happened years earlier, but 1919 was the first commercial broadcast
1925: TV -- tiny people moving inside the box!
Let's not forget the entire transportation phenomenon. Initially we moved as fast as our feet would take us, then a horse. The bicycle, and the motor car, and now trains and planes!
It is beyond my comprehension to think how people viewed all this magic.
Nowadays we are all much more educated and informed. With that knowledge comes understanding, so there's little that manifests itself to truly makes you step back in amazement. Even incredible advancements in medicine seem quite 'normal' and expected.
Perhaps the internet and mobile phone technology have been the two greatest developments in my lifetime!
You?
What about you? What era would you like to return to? And why?
Why not do a blog post, and let me know so that I can add a link here.
