Conversations with my mother
I decided I'd jot down some of the conversations I have with my mother. They are often hysterical or bizarre. She's 80 year's old, and completely with it mentally and physically, but she has a different outlook on many things!
Here's my first documented chat, for entertainment!
Background: Mum moved to a new house last year. I persuaded her not to have a land-line, just a mobile.
Earlier today:
- Ring ring, ring ring (my mobile; mum calling)
- Mum: Hi, it's me. My mobile doesn't seem to be working. I can't make any outgoing calls. I've had it plugged in all morning so the battery is full. The peeps (network signal indicator) is full too.
- Me: Ok, but you've called me from it!
- Mum: Yes, but that's different as you pay for my mobile so it will work to you.
- Me: Ehm!
- Me: Who else have you called?
- Mum: The pharmacy. The automated lady(!) tells me, "The number is not available".
- Me: Did you dial it or did you pick the number from your address book?
- Mum: Yes, I have it written in my book and I called it.
- Me: Who else have you tried?
- Mum: No one.
- Me: So what makes you think it can't make calls to anyone?
- Mum: I called my own number and it didn't work. A computer told me to leave a message!
- Me: Ehm
- Me: Ok, lets give it a few minutes. It could be a temporary problem with the network, or the pharmacy.
- Mum: Ok, I will have my lunch and try again. But what if someone else needs to call the pharmacy. They might not get through either. It's maybe the weather; it's raining just now. There was also a thing on the TV about satellites and rubbish in space. Maybe something is in the way.
Two minutes later.... She calls me back. "It's fine, I called a friend and that worked. I tried the pharmacy and that worked. But I told them that my son said they had a problem, and he knows about these things. The lady didn't seem interested. It's ridiculous when things like this don't work. Old people rely on these things".
