Reminder: Backup your Blog!

Don't forget to take regular backups of your blog. You've put a lot of effort into writing your content. Don't rely on your blog provider to take backups for you.

If you self-host, the backups should be part of your regular backup routine.

If you are relying on a third-party blogging platform you should keep your own backups. It may be a manual process, but it's vital you have your own copies.

How do I backup?

It depends on what blogging application you use. Here are details of a few popular indi-web platforms:

Bearblog
  • Dashboard
  • Settings
  • Export blog data as CSV or MD files

I suggest taking a MD (markdown) backup as this is the most portable format if you need to go elsewhere.

Bearblog will download all of your Pages and Posts to a zip files. Store this somewhere safe. Any customisation, such as CSS, will need manually copied & pasted in text documents.

Note: Images and videos from the Media Centre are NOT downloaded. There is no way to easily extract these, other than right-click and "Save Image As". Hopefully you already have copies.

Micro.blog
  • In the main Dashboard, select "Posts" from the left-hand navigation.
  • at the top, just to the right of your blog address, click the three dots in the circle.
  • Select Export
  • Choose "Export theme and Markdown" for a complete set of data
  • You will receive an email in a few minutes with a link to download the zip file

Repeat the above for "Pages"

Pagecord
  • Dashboard
  • Settings
  • Exports
  • Markdown (Use markdown as it's the most portable format)
  • Click Generate New and then Download the file
Pika
  • On the Dashboard click Settings
  • Scroll down and select "Export my posts and pages"
  • Select Markdown and Images as the Export Type
  • Click Create Export

A link to the export will appear in a few minutes, depending on how big your blog is. Click this and Download / Save As.

You can only do this export once every 7-days!

PureBlog

You will be self hosting, and therefore have access to the file-system. The most important folder to copy is content. Copy the entire folder structure. If you are being more selective, the pages and posts folders contain the written content in MarkDown.

Scribbles
  • Click your blog logo top right
  • Select the blog you wish to backup from the list at the top. There may only be one if you have one blog!
  • Scroll down and click "Export your blog"
  • Change the Export Format to MarkDown and click Create Backup
  • In a few moments the backup will be listed above
  • Click the Download button
