A block of butter defines me

Apparently the way I treat my butter means that society labels me!

Let's roll back to last weekend — we had the out-laws staying with us. (My Other Half's sisters, niece, and great-nephew). It turned out to be a lovely weekend, although 'weekend' itself needs redefined as it was actually from Thursday evening through to Sunday lunch time. Imagine if that was what a weekend denotation was — lovely.

During the visit, and while we all mucked in to prepare Sunday morning breakfast, I opened the tub of butter from the fridge and immediately rolled my eyes — so far back in my head I could see the other side. Now, this action must have been accompanied by an involuntary vocalisation on my part (to be honest, I am not known for holding back on the disapproving dissonance!).

This sparked a question along the lines of "what's wrong?".

I couldn't help but launch into my displeasure at the view before me — the butter looked like it had been hacked by a blind, drunk, executioner wielding a blunt knife.

I further explained that I tend to go at my butter with a calming, soothing, organised approach. Working around the edges, eventually having an island of butter in the middle of the tub through time. I was not used to a cavernous, undulating pile.

I assured everyone that it was fine, and no big deal. I made a mental note to return to the butter later in the day and "fix it". I did not express that externally -- just in my head.

However, I did not escape a cacophony of remarks and sniggers as the dilema was discussed in great detail during prep, and continued into the eating process around the table.

It was generally concluded that I had some form of OCD.

I gracefully remarked that this is not a sign of obsessive–compulsive disorder, and people should stop slapping labels, in many cases erroneously, on individuals. My butter obsession is merely that I like some things to be in order and tidy.

All good, light-hearted fun. However, I do think we are a society that is too eager to label people and their actions.
